Secure 4 Safety

Jaypro Sports is committed to safety on the field. Because of this we have created the Secure 4 Safety Program, which promotes soccer goal safety.

 ASTM Standards and Testing:

The ASTM International (American Standards for Tests and Measurement) is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards that improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. In a nutshell, they’re looking out for your best interests.

ASTM has developed specific testing guidelines that all soccer goal manufacturers should adhere to. Jaypro chaired the committee that developed the first standards in the 1980’s and was the first U.S. manufacturer to voluntarily test their goals against these strict standards.

In our ongoing effort to provide athletes with the safest environment possible, Jaypro has used ASTM (American Standards for Tests and Measurement) as a guide to create new standards for portable soccer goals in the U.S. The goals marked as such have been tested in accordance with the standards set forth by the ASTM committee for portable soccer goal safety. (ASTM Designation: F2056 and F2673).

ASTM F2056-09: Standard Safety and Performance Specification for Soccer Goals

Purpose: Emphasizes the importance of following proper safety procedures when installing, repairing, moving and storing portable soccer goals. Lists testing categories, failure criteria and safety instructions related to portable soccer goals.

Scope: Applies to portable soccer goals with a height of 6-1/2’ to 8’ and width of 18’ to 24’. Intended to address the risk of soccer goal tip-over.

ASTM F2056-09: Strength Test

Apply a 396 lb (1800 N) weight to the center of the crossbar for 60 sec (+10/-0 sec), without fracturing or collapsing.

ASTM F2056-09: Stability Test

Goals are to be set up in the same manner as outlined in the manufacturer’s instructions including anchoring and/or staking.

Apply a horizontal pull force of 242 lbs (1100 N) at the center of the crossbar for 60 sec (+10/-0 sec), without the goal tipping over (failure to return to upright position).

ASTM F2673-08: Standard Safety Specification for Special Tip-Resistant Movable Soccer Goals

Purpose: Provides an additional degree of safety to portable soccer goals.

Provides methods for testing the stability of portable soccer goals.

Scope: Applies to special tip-resistant goals designed to provide some additional degree of safety if, by accident, they are not tied down or tied down incorrectly. Applies to portable soccer goals with a height of 6-1/2’ to 8’ and width of 18’ to 24’. Intended to address the risk of soccer goal tip-over.

ASTM F1938-98 (2009): Standard Guide for Safer Use of Movable Soccer Goals

Purpose: Provides guidelines for the installation, safe use, and proper storage of full-size or nearly full-size portable soccer goals, which can help prevent deaths and serious injuries resulting from soccer goal tip-over. Emphasizes the importance of following proper safety procedures when installing, repairing, moving and storing portable soccer goals. Lists important design and anchor criteria, including suggested types of anchors.

Scope: Applies to portable soccer goals with a height of 6-1/2’ to 8’ and width of 18’ to 24’

Intended to address the risk of soccer goal tip-over

ASTM F1938-98 (2009): Standard Guide for Safer Use of Movable Soccer Goals

Design and Anchoring Criteria

The stability of portable soccer goals can be enhanced by different methods, including:

Lengthening the overall depth (placing more mass at the back of the goal)

Selecting appropriate materials (using lightweight material for goal posts and crossbar, and heavier materials for the ground bar and frame)

Collapsible goals (goals which have a heavy rear framework and fold flat when not in use)

All portable soccer goals must be properly anchored regardless of stabilization method.

Anchoring

“It is imperative that all portable soccer goals are always anchored properly through the use of either weights or staking. The proper type and quantity anchor used to firmly anchor the goal depends on the type of playing surface, soil type and moisture content, and weight of the goal.”

All anchors must be installed according to proper specification, and must be visible within proximity of the goal.

Recommended anchor types include:

Stake-type anchors include auger (helical-shaped and screwed into the ground), peg (of varying lengths and diameters and range in size from 10 in. (250 mm) to 24 in. (600 mm) in length) and J-hook (peg with a curved-top portion designed to fit over goal members to secure it to the ground) style stakes.

Sandbags may be used as an anchor for hard surfaces such as artificial turf or indoor facilities.

Counterweights may also be used on hard, artificial or indoor surfaces.

Semi-permanent anchors – consisting of an underground base and an above ground attachment (either a tether or a bolt) – are a valid option.

Net pegs must be used only to secure the net in place, and must not be used as an anchoring system.

New Labeling System:

Jaypro has adopted a new labeling system in our literature and on our soccer goals. Included with our soccer goals you will find labels as shown to the right. These labels will identify the model of the goal, the safety requirements it meets and the appropriate counterweight required for that specific goal.

Throughout the Soccer section of our catalog, Jaypro has listed the counterweight required for each soccer goal, like the icon shown below. Even with the ASTM requirement met in our testing, all soccer goals that are not permanently anchored must have a certain counterweight required on the rear frame of the goal. Based on the ASTM test results, it was determined the following counterweights are required for Jaypro portable goals.
